How Satellite Fire Detection Works

Earth-observing instruments identify unusual thermal signals in pixels. Processing turns those signals into observations with coordinates, time, confidence, and sometimes Fire Radiative Power.

From radiance to a detection

A satellite does not photograph a named incident for ThermalGlobe. An instrument measures energy in spectral bands. An active-fire algorithm compares the hot pixel with surrounding context and other tests before reporting a thermal anomaly.

Why detections can be delayed or missing

  • A satellite must pass over the area.
  • Cloud, smoke, terrain, and sensor geometry can obscure or shift observations.
  • Processing and distribution take time.
  • Small, cool, short-lived, or covered fires may not be detected.

What the point means

The coordinate represents a detected pixel, not an exact ignition point, flame front, or perimeter. The same event may generate multiple observations from the same or different sensors over time.

Use it safely

Use satellite detection maps for situational awareness and exploration. For danger, road access, evacuation, and official incident status, follow competent local authorities.
